Growing up, India was surrounded by the arts and music. Having parents in the creative field, she always knew she wanted a career that would allow her to express her creativity and connect with others on a personal level. Originally a Hairstylist by trade, she moved to Edmonton from Nova Scotia for opportunities in the beauty industry. “I was a few months pregnant and there weren’t many jobs in Nova Scotia”. After taking a maternity leave, she realized that it was the perfect opportunity to pursue her next dream career: an Esthetician.
“India has been a pleasure to mentor. She always has an upbeat attitude and is ready to lend a helping hand wherever she can. She brings great creativity and constant attention to detail and exceptional customer care to every guest she encounters” says Esthetics instructor, Bryce Munro.
Why did you choose Esthetics as a career?
“I was raised by 2 artists. Growing up I always wanted to get a job where I could combine art and make money at the same time. In High School, I loved painting but I knew it would be hard to get far with it. At first, I got into Hairstyling. After having a baby, I went into Esthetics because I decided that I wanted to be able to do both.”
What do you like most about the industry so far?
“Being able to be creative with no restrictions.. There are not too many industries and jobs that let you do that. Because I was raised by artists, being able to express my creativity is important to me.”
What do you love about MC College?
“The teachers are seriously so awesome….They really care about you and your ability to move forward. They go above and beyond to make sure you understand something. If you’re having trouble with a service, they are always there to guide you.”
Who or what motivates you?
“My daughter. She’s 2 years old and I just want to be the best and do the best for her.”
What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned or faced while at MC College?
“Building a clientele has been the hardest part so far. I’m also really shy and it’s hard for me to put myself out there but I’m still learning how to break it. Using Instagram to put my work up has helped out a lot with my shyness and has helped me get more clients too.”
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Don’t do too many things at once because you’ll just lose your focus. Have a goal in mind and work towards it.”
What’s your secret to getting clients?
“Always be friendly, talkative and don’t swear in front of your clients…even on your bad days! When you’re friendly and professional, people want to come back to you and sometimes they’ll even recommend you on their facebook to their friends.”
Do you have any social media tips to offer MC College Students?
“Hashtag everything because that’s how people will find your work, only post your best work and always tag MC College because they’ll repost it! I actually got featured a few times on MC’s Instagram. I got a few clients who came in and requested me because they saw my nail work featured on MC’s Instagram. It’s pretty cool. So, always tag MC College!”
Every month, Campus Directors and Instructors nominate a student they feel should be recognized as an MC Elite. Students are chosen based on their use of social media to promote themselves and by tagging #mccollege and #mclife in their social media posts.
