From HTML coding and building websites to lavender balayage, our July MC Elite is going out to Michael Maier from the hairstyling program at our Edmonton campus!
“Michael is an incredibly hard working and dedicated individual. He is talented and full of charisma. In the school salon the clients always leave happy and pleased with the quality of his skills and customer service. When the opportunity arises, Michael is always willing to help out fellow students and instructors. He always has a great attitude and an infectious smile that could turn anyone’s day around. ” says Hairstyling Instructor, Cathy Whitford.
Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
“I had always wanted to be a Hairstylist but it was my backup plan because I got into IT and Design at NAIT. When I was almost finished, I realized that I hated my major and that really scared me. When I was younger, I always liked doing my own and my friends’ hair so it was only natural. My twin brother graduated from MC last year and he really loved the experience which helped me decide where I wanted to go. But before I got into MC, I asked him if it was ok that I go too because I didn’t want him to get mad or think that I was copying him. I had previously met the instructors when I was a model for my brother and they are all awesome. They were all so supportive and fun. That also helped me make my decision”
*Fun fact: his twin brother, Matthew Maier was a model in our promo video!
What do you like most about the industry so far?
“The creativity. I loved colour formulation and I love creeping around the school to see what the other students are up to. I love that everyone has their own way of doing things. It might be the same haircut but the execution is different”.
What do you love about MC College?
“I love the instructors – their personalities and their sense of humor. Everyone on campus is different and hilarious, encouraging and helpful. They really make it a really positive environment”.
Who or what motivates you?
“There’s a Youtuber that I watch, Kyle Krieger. He’s one of the reasons why I went into Hairstyling. His videos showed me a different side of the industry which really pushed me to want to get into Hairstyling…I want to focus on my career as a Hairstylist right now and then I’ll focus on other stuff like competitions”.
What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned or faced while at MC College?
“ugghhh perms and finger waves. It’s one of those things that you have to do but you don’t want to”.
What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Do as I say and not what I do – Cathy Whitford”.
What’s your secret to getting clients?
“Be personable- you have to interact with clients. Don’t be awkward. People come back to you because of your personality and also your skills too! If you’re awkward and don’t talk with your clients, no one will want to book with you!”
Do you have any social media tips to offer MC College Students?
“Use lots of hash tags. I always tag MC and Artego because they feature your work on their Instagram. Last week, I had a client message me on Instagram that wanted to book with me because she saw my work featured on MC’s Instagram. That was pretty cool! Also, all students should use Instagram because it’s good to use and keep as a portfolio”
Every month, Campus Directors and Instructors nominate a student they feel should be recognized as an MC Elite. Students are chosen based on their use of social media to promote themselves and by tagging #mccollege and #mclife in their social media posts.
