Student of the Month: Afreen Merchant 💅

afreen 1

From full time single Mom to student, this woman is a super hero! 👑 Our Student of the Month goes out to Esthetician-to-be, ➡️ Afreen Merchant ⬅️ from the Calgary campus. “She has an incredible attitude about her studies, the school and life… and spreads her own special brand of optimism” says Calgary Director, Todd Maki.

Why did you choose Esthetics as a career?
“Both my Mom and Grandma were Beauticians. Unfortunately, God felt that he was missing two Angels and they are now with him, so this allows me to feel connected to them in some way. Beauty has always been something I have found an interest in, and when I was at my lowest and didn’t know what to do with my life, Esthetics was there for me.”

What do you like most about Esthetics so far?
“I love the way people smile after they get their treatment done. It is the highlight of my day knowing that I can make a difference in someone’s life no matter how big or little.”

What do you love about MC College?
“I love my instructors!…My learning experience has been easier because they have been so understanding….Everyone is supportive here. They are always there for you and help you when you make a mistake. It feels like another family to me, we are always together”

We understand, the struggle is real…so what has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned at MC College? Why?
“I am a full time Mom. My son will always come first so it was very difficult taking care of him, balancing school, and studying for tests and quizzes. There are days where I wake up at 7am to get my son ready so that I can drop him off to day care before going to school, and staying up till 3 or 4 in the morning studying and finishing assignments after I have put him to bed.”

What is the best advice you’ve received about the industry, beauty school or career?
“Beauty will never go out of style”

What advice would you give to someone who wants to become an Esthetician?
“It isn’t just a job, or just a hobby. It’s a full time commitment. The instructors are really helpful and they ensure that you will succeed. The most important thing to remember is that it’s okay to ask questions.”

What are your must have Bernard Cassiere or OPI products?
“Honey oxygenating line…I have sensitive skin and my face never reacts badly to it”

Student of the Month: Carlo Rodillo 💈✂

carlo 1.png

From fades to comb overs and even the braided man top knot, he’s been on the barbering grind since becoming a student. Our November Student of the Month goes out to freshly graduated Hairstyling Student 👉Carlo Rodillo👈 from our Winnipeg campus!

Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
I’ve always been interested in Hairstyling but never got into it ‘cause of pressure from family. When I finally got into hair, I loved it! Growing up, drawing used to be my favorite hobby. When I first started school and cut hair for the first time, it gave me a nostalgic feeling with drawing. To me, drawing and hairstyling- that’s art!

What made you choose barbering?
“When I started school, I didn’t want to just cut girls hair and I didn’t see a lot of male hairstylists when I started school. I had a lot of guy friends who needed their hair cut and barbering went from there.”

What do you love about MC College?
“EVERYTHING. 👐 Everyone is so supportive, helpful and not rude.”

What has surprised you the most about beauty school?
“The places you can go with what you learn. I thought going to hair school meant that you could only be a hairstylist but you can go and enter competitions, become famous and lots more. There are a lot of things that I can do.”

What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned at MC College?
“The chemistry behind hair – it’s not really something you think about when you’re doing a color or cutting hair.”

What are your plans for the future now that you’ve just graduated?
“Right now I’m apprenticing at Hunter and Gun Barber Shop. There’s so much I can do and there’s so many opportunities out there that it’s hard for me to say what my plans are.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received about beauty school?
“Don’t give up!!”

What are your must have Artego product(s)?
“Fast replay is pretty crazy! It’s the best product for men’s styling”

Go and give Carlo some love and follow him on Instagram (@thatbarberillo), snapchat (@kingrillorc) and twitter (@jcrodillo)!!

Every month, we highlight a student from one of our 6 campuses. The Student of the Month is nominated by Campus Directors and Instructors, and are chosen based on the students’ hard work and dedication in the salon/spa, classroom, community/volunteering and/or use of social media to promote themselves.

Why MC College?

Styling her Barbie dolls hair and making friends with Hairstylists was an early indicator that Alicia would start a career in the Beauty Industry. After taking Cosmetology classes in High School and receiving a scholarship, Alicia decided to accomplish her dream to become a Hairstylist. Her entrepreneurial spirit, need for hands-on education and word of mouth led Alicia to enroll and graduate from MC College Saskatoon. “MC College will teach you the fundamentals to becoming the best Hairstylist in the world…they give you a great foundation for the real world” says Alicia.

Alicia Soulier 1

Soon after graduating, Alicia was set on becoming a salon owner. After realizing that one of Saskatoon’s premiere neighborhoods lacked an upscale hair salon, she pounced on the opportunity and opened ‘Capelli Hair Studio’. In 2012, it placed top 5 in Contessa’s ‘Salon Interior of the Year’ award and was named as the best hair salon in Saskatoon by Fine Lifestyles magazine.

Advice from Alumni

“Be humble. Be Passionate. Be respectful of your Mentors. Be passionate about what you do”

As an award winning superstar hairstylist, salon owner, educator and a board member of the Saskatoon Fashion and Design Festival, Alicia credits her success to her mentor, Kim Regier of Chel SalonSpa and her need for continuous learning. “Never think you know it all. Always strive for more education and inspiration” says Alicia. She is known for mentoring her staff, new Hairstylists and students so that they can become successful in their career.

Today, she continues to enter hair competitions and currently styles hair in photoshoots and fashion shows. She has done hair for Edge Agency and fashion houses such as White Dhalia House of Fashion, Hillberg and Berk, , Pyer Mossto and  Concept Korea to name a few.

Open house was a success!

If you attended our Open House last weekend, thanks! Over 300 people came through our doors to check out our Hairstyling, Esthetics and Fashion Design* programs, and experience the vibrant student atmosphere.

Our students were available to give tours of the campus and do complimentary services such as manicures, hand massages and mini hair make-overs. Both guests and students had a blast with our MC College frame at the photo booth:

In one classroom, computers were set up so guests can explore Artist Access; MC College’s online learning resource. In Artist Access, students can access their textbooks and classroom materials from their smart phones, tablets and laptops… anywhere, anytime. In another classroom, there were Financial Advisors from BMO, RBC and CIBC available to answer questions about financing and funding.

At the event, every campus held a student-led photo shoot. From Gossip Girl to Hollywood glamour and Walking Dead themed photo shoots, MC College students did hair, make-up and wardrobe styling on models, and directed the photo shoot.
