Braden initially started in the Fashion Industry as an Assistant Merchandiser at Henry Singer. Throughout his time at MC College, he has experimented with sublimation dying, graphic prints and unique hardware details. From Italian culture to Andy Warhol and the Wild West, he draws inspiration from a variety of outlets.

His collection, ‘Strade Palermo’, is an homage to his appreciation for design and Italian culture. From unique artisanal designs to architectural sculpture, he uses prints and embellishments to blend street style with luxury in his collection.

With family in the Fashion Industry and her Parisian background, Gloria has developed a unique sense of style and luxury. In the past year, she has competed in Western Canada Fashion Week’s Emerging Designers Competition. Ralph and Russo, Elie Saab and Alexandre Vauthier are a few of her fashion label icons.

Her collection, ‘Glass’, features structured looks with prints, metallic fabric and accents of faux fur. The collection also features touches of angular details, bold structures and sleek evening pieces with sequined paneling.

One of Maggie’s earliest memories of the Fashion Industry was flipping through fashion magazines her mom had brought home from Asia. While coveting the latest styles, she started sketching her own version of Asia’s fashion trends.

From mother of pearl accents to seashell silk screens and pom pom detailing, her collection is a satirical play on the “kitschy-ness” of Asian contemporary branding.

The collection, “Sakura Petals” was inspired by a mix of Anime, East Asian culture and the beach.

Edmonton Fashion Graduate Profile: Lilian Onyejiuwa

In 2013, Lilian immigrated to Canada from Nigeria. Originally, she wanted to pursue a career in medicine but decided to follow her dream to be a Fashion Designer. Her career in fashion originally started when she began working as a Tailoring Assistant in Nigeria. She plans on opening a ready to wear and custom clothing store called, L&C Designs.

Inspired by her heritage, ‘Afrocentric’ incorporates traditional African designs with a bohemian twist. The collection includes casual and evening garments with rich wax prints on fun silhouettes.

According to Lilian, wax prints are traditionally a nonverbal way of communication amongst African women. The designs on wax print fabrics are beautiful and bold, and has influenced fashion worldwide.

Edmonton Fashion Graduate Profile: Bayenah Batterjee

Bayenah moved to Canada from Jeddah, the fashion capital of Saudi Arabia. From her cultural background to traveling, she finds inspiration everywhere she goes. Being surrounded by different fabrics, textures and colour in Jeddah inspired her to pursue a career as a Fashion Designer.

The first garment she designed was her sisters wedding dress. In March 2016, she won third place in Western Canada Fashion Week’s Emerging Designers Competition for her embroidered, faux fur and shearling coat.

Her collection, “Naseej” includes garments with ornate embroidery and bright tropical colours. Early inspiration for the collection came from a recent trip to the Chihuly Exhibit in Seattle.

Growing up in the country, Shawna had a lot of free time to daydream and get creative. She was initially drawn to the arts and design through music. Her parents were very supportive and accommodating to her overactive imagination and musical ambitions, making sure she had a guitar to play and endless art supplies to keep her busy.

Coming to MC also allowed Shawna to fulfill a childhood dream that she shared with a cousin who is no longer with her but whom she thinks about every day. It was this relationship that truly motivated Shawna to study fashion and to pursue it as a career.

Edmonton Fashion Graduate Profile: Martina Hrycun

Martina was born in Vancouver but moved to Saipan for 5 years. She draws inspiration through travelling. While on a trip to Italy, she became inspired by the rich history, culture and architecture; sparking her inner creativity. Growing up, she battled with epilepsy but didn’t let that get in her way of reaching her goals to become a Fashion Designer.

 

Her collection, Paradox, incorporates minimalism with architecturally accented detailing, textured fabrics and asymmetrical elements. She says she was “inspired by creating a collection that was both minimal and interesting that’s why it’s called paradox.”

Growing up in Egypt has inspired Nadine’s unique design perspective. There, she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with a major in Finance, and started working as a Financial Analyst.

Edmonton Fashion Graduate Profile: Mikaela Supple

Growing up, Mikaela had never thought about pursuing a career in the Fashion Industry. This changed when she took part in MC College’s Beauty Apprentice program where she helped style models backstage for the New Designers Fashion Show.

The experience resonated with her and left her wanting more. Since then, she has helped backstage at Suka Clothing and Sessa Wearables.

From asymmetrical silhouettes to paint splatters, the collection, “Think!”, incorporates a mix of rebellion and an appreciation for art.

After living in Toronto several years ago, Listah discovered fashion as an outlet for her self expression. She got started in the Industry by modeling for local Designers and in Western Canada Fashion Week. After seeing garments that designers were producing, she was inspired to launch a career in the industry.
