RECAP: 2017 MCxNAHA

VEGAS 2017

From taking selfies with Sam Villa at the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) to watching the light show on Fremont Street, a trip to Las Vegas was the perfect way to launch a career in Hairstyling!

From July 8 to 11, over 80 MC College Students and staff made their way to Las Vegas for the 12th annual MCxNAHA show and 28th annual NAHA’s (one of the biggest events of the hairstyling industry). Every student that enrolled in the June Hairstyling program went on this trip for FREE.

At the MCxNAHA show, groups broke out into 3 sessions:
1). Hair Improv
Presenters: Yolly ten Koppel (Artistic Director, Pivot Point International) and Laddie James (Owner and Master Stylist, The Hairstyle Inn)

2). Creating a NAHA entry
Presenters: Cheryl Harrison (VP Operations, MC College) & Jeff Louis (National Artistic Director, Artego)
From lighting and photoshop to choosing a model, the process behind a NAHA entry can be intimidating, especially for a Student! Using the 2017 NAHA entries and previous MC College graduates’ entries, students got an inside look at what to look for when creating an entry.

3). Building your personal brand on social media
Presenters: Nikki McCrimmon (Admissions Leader, MC College) and Chinda Sin (Marketing Coordinator, MC College)
Whether it’s finding love on Tinder/Grinder or using Pivot Point’s LAB, everyone’s on social media so there’s no excuse to not use it to build a brand. Before students went out and became the next social media rock star, we gave them the top 5 tips to creating and building a brand on social media.

From poker tables to the slot machines, all eyes were on the MC Squad as we made our way to Mandalay Bay for the NAHA’s. At the show, students got the chance to watch hair and fashion presentations by the biggest names in the industry, network with celebrity hairstylists such as Charlie Price and Vivienne Mackinder, and watch industry innovator, Sam Villa receive an NAHA Lifetime Achievement Award.

“In Vegas we had amazing opportunities that I will never forget…while watching all the NAHA finalists walk down the red carpet, I met and spoke to some amazing people…When we sat down to watch the award show I got to sit beside a couple who has known Sam Villa for many years and that alone was awesome!!!” says MC College Edmonton Hairstyling Student, Amber-Rae Ens (@got_Rootz)

This February, we will be the FIRST Canadian School to launch Pivot Point’s Learn About Beauty. Whether English is your second language or you’re struggling to keep up, LAB will keep you motivated to learn and keep you on track with your education. But…what is LAB?!

From Snapchat to Instagram, you 💕 sharing your selfies and connecting with your friends. With LAB, it’s similar – it’s a digital learning platform that looks and feels like Social Media. From showing off pictures of your latest Kylie Jenner-Esque hair creations to posting tips for creating on fleek ombre nails in the discussion forum, you’ll be able to post and communicate with MC Instructors, Support Staff and Students across all 6 MC College campuses.

callouts.png
If you’re a competitive person, you can earn points for social activities and school work in LAB. You can see how you stack up with the members of your community and “rise up to the challenge of your rivals” (aka: other students) to the top of the leaderboard.

Whether you’re on an iPhone or Samsung, computer or a tablet, you have easy and on-demand access to an online collection of study guides, quizzes, videos and more. Learn at your own pace, whenever and wherever you need it!

Day_2_647_cropped_v1.jpg
Pivot Point educational content is at the core of LAB. Lessons are short and include interactive materials to make learning fun and engaging. Included in LAB are learning paths which will guide you through every step of your education and keep you organized.

Mannequin Heads: Behind the Scenes

cuthair

Do you remember cutting off your Barbie or Ken dolls’ hair and wishing for it to grow back? Or trying to curl their hair but end up melting it? For many future hairstylists, Barbie and Ken are usually their first clients/mannequin head.

From finger waves to balayage, Hairstyling students use mannequin heads to practice their craft. But unlike practicing on an acrylic/plastic haired friend (we’re talking about Barbie!!), students at MC College learn the Art of Hairstyling on Pivot Point mannequins that are made with 100% real human hair. Working on real human hair allows students to experience realistic results. These mannequin heads are considered as the Ferraris’ in the Hairstyling Industry.

mann 1

But…where does the hair come from?

Pivot Point collects hair from China and India. In many parts of the world, people sell their hair for income. Once collected, the hair is grouped based on length and then disinfected several times. From there, it undergoes chemical treatments to achieve different colors and hair textures. Throughout the whole process, the hairs’ moisture and elasticity levels are monitored to ensure it’s still consistent with human hair. To make hair education as realistic as possible, Pivot Point mannequin heads’ features are hand painted to make it look anatomically correct. The hair is professionally implanted (by hand) and evenly distributed to mimic natural human hair growth. From implanting hair to painting it’s on fleek eye brows, the head itself is created and assembled by artists in China.

manne
To ensure that these artists are treated equally and are given ethical working conditions, all Pivot Point mannequin heads are SA8000 certified. This means that educational goods such as mannequin heads are created in a working environment that’s free of forced and child labor, poor working conditions and wages, and unfair work hours. The certification also ensures that “the quality of goods match the well-being of the artisans who create them”.

So, how do you know if mannequin heads are SA8000 certified? Look for the below tag:

#MCxNAHA 2013

MC College 568

On Sunday July 14th over 100 staff and students from all seven MC College Group schools across Western Canada attended the eighth annual MC Viva Las Vegas conference.  Every student who enrolled in the Hairstyling program in June received this free trip to Las Vegas to participate in the conference and attend the North American Hairstyling Awards.

The conference, just for MC students and staff, featured renowned European stylist and Pivot Point International Artistic Director Yolly Ten Koppel along with International platform artist Laddie James. Yolly and Laddie presented models showing the latest in coloring, cutting and styling techniques.

As if that wasn’t exciting enough, MC students and staff were treated to a special guest presentation by acclaimed competition artist, Charlie Price. Charlie has been nominated for countless North American Hairstyling Awards and Canadian Mirror Awards. He spoke about his love of hairstyling and high-fashion and how he combined them both by working backstage as a hairstylist at fashion shows in New York and Europe. He also discussed his previous NAHA entries and winners. Day one was filled with more outstanding guest speakers from Robert Passage, Chairman and CEO and Melanie Koroyan-Kopeikin, President, both of Pivot Point International and a surprise visit from Carrie and Erin of The Hair Nerds!

Later that evening, students and staff attended the 24th North American Hairstyling Awards Gala hosted by Mario Lopez. Students saw the amazing work of the hairstyling industry’s elite including Dimitrios Tsioumas.

On the final day of the conference, students were introduced to Laura Dunphy, Publisher of industry magazine, Salon Magazine. Laura spoke about the Contessas (a Canadian hairstyling awards) as well as her impressive career. We also met Shaun Pulfrey, the creator of Tangle Teezer. He spoke about how he created the styling tool, his Dragon’s Den experience and gave a demo on how to use the Tangle Teezer! To bring our exciting day two to a close, Jeff Louis, National Artistic Director of Artego Canada, created a fun questionnaire and promoted interaction between students and staff. One of the best answers to the question “Whose hair would you like to do, past or present?” – Jesus.

The objective of the trip is to create an exciting impression of the industry for new students.  MC College Group believes in training their students to succeed.  The best way to teach success is by observing successful people.  What better exposure can there be, than meeting with and listening to industry icons!  For more information about this exciting career, go to www.mccollege.ca.
