Why did you start a career in Hairstyling?
“Hairstyling and barbering has always been something in the back of my mind…my mom was a Stylist and I grew up in the salon…Some of my first memories from my childhood are being my mom’s guinea pig. Many times she practiced perms on me, I cried a few times and disliked the rotten egg smell…I grew up folding towels and hanging around answering phones. When I became a bit older and could help, I would sweep hair and wash people’s hair without spraying them down…Being from Regina and growing up in a salon, I saw lots of the same things for years but when I ventured into social media, I saw how many more things people were doing like rainbow hair, pastel colours, bright-and-vibrant to soft-and-faded.”

A post shared by Matthew Dwayne (@matts.vibe) on

What did you do before starting your career in Hairstyling?
“I was a cook for my entire life. With Hairstyling, you get to work with other people and be your own boss at the same time. At the end of the day, it’s your chair, it’s the effort you put into it. In the restaurant industry, you couldn’t really do that unless you were a restaurant owner or investor… in a few days I’m going to be 33 and I wanted a career where I could connect with people.”

What do you like most about the industry?
“I love the people. I love talking to them and seeing them smile after you give them a haircut”

Who or what motivates you?
“My fellow classmates. Everyone is talented. There are going to be some millionaires here because they are that good!”

My buddy Dusting came by for a refresher this afternoon!!! #fades #wahlsenior #mccollege #hairgamestrong

So far, what are your career highlights?
“I got the opportunity through MC College to work with Paul Mitchell. I was in Vegas a few weeks ago during the NAHA’s for education. I am so fortunate and grateful for the opportunity MC gave me”
“We had Paul Mitchell in the school back in January. Matt took it upon himself to go downstairs and ask if he could watch and observe. They ended up asking him to assist them for the 3 days (Sat, Sun & Mon). He did all 3 days. The Saskatoon rep offered him a job on the spot” says MC College Saskatoon Director, Vanessa Slater.

What are your plans when you graduate? What’s your long term goal?
“I would love to be an educator. I also want to travel to the Middle East and take my trade with me. What I love about hair is that there is no language barrier…well I mean there is but you can work your way around with pictures and demonstrating”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“If you’re in a bad mood, don’t take that out on people. Put your best foot forward.”

Had an amazing day doing salon tours with my unit 4 homies and amazing coach Marg !! She the boss

On April 8, all MC College campuses held an Open House that was 🔥🔥🔥; from special effects makeup and live fashion sketching to mini DIY (do-it-yourself) stations. Across the 6 campuses, over 300 people attended the event to experience what the #MCLife is all about, and to learn about career opportunities in the Beauty and Fashion Industry.

Attendees tested out our interactive learning platform, Learn About Beauty, while getting the chance to tour the campus and meet the MC Squad: staff, students, graduates and industry partners. From a braiding and contouring bar to marble nails and spring updos, each campus set up mini DIY stations so that event attendees could try out the latest beauty trends on themselves. Swag bags and a $1000 tuition scholarship were also given out at each campus – congratulations to all of the winners!

Attendees also got the chance to watch a live demo of mermaid hair, alien bleeding glitter, special effects makeup, microdermabrasions and chemical peels. Everyone who attended had the opportunity to play with mannequins and learn how to apply colour at the colour station.

MC Elite: Shauntel Leffler

shauntel lFacebook: SL Hair (@shaunzhairdesignz)
Instagram: @sl.hair

From spending long nights in the library memorizing the major muscle groups to doing flawless balayage and #fadefridays, our MC Elite for February is going out to Shauntel Leffler from the Saskatoon Campus! “Last year, I was enrolled in Kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan. I hated the formality of it…I switched careers to become a Hairstylist because I was unhappy and miserable.”

“Shauntel is very diligent and thorough when it comes to consulting her clients and providing services to them…she makes sure she understands what her clients want. She is very inquisitive especially when she is not busy with clients so that she can take in all the education she can” says Hairstyling Instructor, Marg Ellis.
Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
“I wanted to put my personal touch on stuff and be able to use my creativity. In High School, I was really into makeup and hair but I always thought of it as a hobby and never knew I would make it into a career. When I started researching MC College and Hairstyling, I knew it was the path for me!”

What do you like most about Hairstyling so far?
“Colour because you can be so creative and it creates the biggest change in someone’s image!”

What do you love about MC College?
“It’s like family. You come here and everyone is happy and friendly. It’s an awesome environment and you actually look forward to coming to school.”

What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned or faced while at MC College?
“The learning environment because it’s so different from what I was used to. In university, it was all about memorizing. Here, it’ all hands-on, technical and creative. I also find it challenging communicating with clients to make sure you know what they want.”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Do what you love. I know that’s cheesy and straight to the point but its true! Don’t stick to something you hate or are unhappy with. This is why I switched careers!”

Babylights combined with balayage?! Yes please! #yxehair #yxehairstylist #mccollegegroup

A post shared by SL HAIR (@sl.hair) on

What’s your secret to getting clients?
“Advertise yourself and showcase what you can do on Facebook and Instagram…that has helped me get my name out there. When you’re in school, people don’t know the awesome stuff you can do and putting it out there makes them see what you can do as a student…having Instagram and Facebook set allows people to find you and get a hold of you to book….Facebook is the best for me because I can reach more people of all ages.”

Do you have any social media tips to offer MC College Students?
“Keep your page professional and don’t post selfies and what not. Go with a theme and stick with it. If you’re going to be using a background, make sure your backgrounds in your posts look similar. Be consistent and make sure your posts look presentable.”

Student of the Month: Garett McCallum

Garrett M

All the way from a small Community called Pukatawagan in Manitoba, our Student of the Month is going out to Garett McCallum from the Saskatoon campus! Originally, he pursued a career in politics but realized that “politics wasn’t up my alley…I should have known from my first college applications that Hairstyling should have been my first choice from the beginning”.

Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
“Growing up it has been a struggle not only for me but for my family…bad decisions and substance abuse became a daily thing to see but I took it upon myself to surround me and my siblings with Mother Nature. During this time, I discovered that I had a passion for doing hair…and I was proud to show what minor skills I had… whenever I did my sister’s or friend’s hair, it took me away from what was going on in my life…doing hair is music for my hand…it opened my eyes to see that I have to do better for them and myself.”

Going to be an amazing #hairstylist #gaylife #schoolflow #2016

A post shared by Garett McCallum (@krackahlahkin) on

What do you like most about Hairstyling so far?
“I like that I’m able to express myself in a creative way…there is no limitation of what you can do with hair.”

What do you love about MC College?
“I love the staff, environment…and that there’s so much hands-on training…I also like that the school gives us opportunities to volunteer and helping make people feel better about themselves…attending school has made me a go-getter! ”

What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned or faced while at MC College?
“Learning how to be punctual! I have been in school for almost 3 months now and have overcome housing obstacles and transportation problems…I’ve lived and learned many lessons just from living in different cities…being bullied and being gay made things wildly difficult for me because I’ve been in trouble numerous times for sticking up for myself….Because of obstacles in life, it took me a long time to get into MC College and I wasn’t going to give up…I realized if I wanted to pursue a career in Hairstyling, I have to take action and actually move to a city that has a good school and MC College was my choice! I’m in unit 1 and things are only getting better not only for me but for my future…I’m loving every minute of it!!”

A post shared by Garett Mccallum (@gdmccallum89) on

You went to the North American Hairstyling Awards in Vegas last month, how was that!??
“I feel so inspired by the NAHA’s….I have some ideas for my submission but I’m going to make a plan and then a back up plan and then ANOTHER back up plan, just in case! My favorite part was when the artists from Wella told their stories of how they got started. It was so touching and inspiring…I wanted to cry. I loved watching all the work come down the runway. There was long and short hair and hair of all colors.”

What are you looking forward to at MC College?
“OMG photo shoots and extensions! I felt so inspired by the NAHA’s…there are so many possibilities that I could do”

What is the best advice you’ve ever received?
“My grandpa always told me: Do what you want and don’t give up no matter how many people stomp on you.”

Gave it a try😘

Why should clients book with you?
