It’s already 2015 and we’re counting down the top 10 events that happened at MC College in 2014! From Vegas and London to right here at home, 2014 was jam packed with travels, anniversaries, volunteering and much more! In chronological order:
1). Hair Massacure and Pinking
Bald is beautiful. Throughout 2014, several MC College campuses helped raise funds and awareness for cancer research. Here’s a recap:
– Cuts for Cancer (Kelowna): In May, students were invited to Kelowna Secondary High School to shave heads for cancer awareness. Over 30 High School students cut their hair in front of an audience of 200 people – from classmates and administrative staff to friends and families.
– Hair Massacure Shave off (Edmonton): On Valentine’s Day, students and staff from the Edmonton campus collaborated with local salons to help shave heads for the annual Hair Massacure shave-off event. Throughout the event, students shaved over 300 heads, including an Edmonton Eskimo and a local radio DJ!
– Paint the town PINK (Calgary): From beards to eyebrows, Calgary MC College students were busy pinking hair for the annual Southern Alberta Hair Massacure event. What’s pinking, you ask? It’s when people bleach and color their hair pink to raise funds for local children’s charities. This year, local celebrity Jill Belland from Breakfast Television was on location to interview participants while they got their hair bleached and pinked by our students
Even with hours of practicing finger waves, perfecting the latest nail art trends or pulling an all-nighter to finish an assignment, time flies by when you’re having fun at MC College. So, to kick start students’ career in the beauty industry, we did it the best way we knew how…with a party! Twice a year, we host a graduation party at each campus. In 2014, hundreds of Hairstyling, Esthetics and Fashion Design students celebrated their success with family, friends, industry partners and MC staff. Awards such as the Frank Cairo and Citizenship award were handed out, speeches were made and photo booths were set up with awesome props.

From July 12-14, over 90 MC College students and staff travelled to Las Vegas for the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) and MC Viva Las Vegas Show. The exclusive show, just for MC College students, featured Pivot Point’s International Artistic Director Yolly Ten Koppel, Laddie James (platform artist), and MC College Hairstyling Instructors Kym Carrol, Candice Laczko and Ashley Britton. The showstopper was guest speaker, Celebrity Hairstylist Michael O’Rourke. After the show, students got glammed up for the NAHA’s, where they rubbed shoulders with industry artists, magazine editors and celebrities (Guliana and Bill Rancic!!). Every student who enrolled in the June Hairstyling class received this trip at no cost.
4). Industry Night at Kelowna
They seat you at tables, serve you drinks and food, and slave away in the kitchen. On August 5th, bartenders, waitresses, waiters, servers, cooks and cocktailers took the night off ‘to serve to be served’ at our Industry Night in Kelowna. Throughout the night, hair transformations were unveiled, nails were glammed up and eyebrows were on fleek as free services were offered to those in the service industry. In addition, there was a draw to win a $1000 scholarship to our full time Hairstyling or Esthetics program
5). MC College Saskatoon celebrates its 25th anniversary
On September 29th, MC College Saskatoon celebrated its 25th anniversary. The event also unveiled the newly renovated basement which includes: an Artego Creative Lounge for photo shoots, a huge student lounge with a built in energy bar (to charge phones, laptops and tablets), and classrooms. In attendance were: Sharon Sharpe Titus (the beauty guru behind SST Cosmetics), Laddie James (Hairstyle Inn), Don Morgan (Minister of Education), Joe Sebulsky (previous Campus Director for MC College Sasaktoon), Frank Cairo (Founder and Visionary of MC College) and much more! Throughout the night, guests enjoyed throwback music from the past 25 years, personalized MC cupcakes and a tour of the renovated space. At the event, ShawTV filmed a special episode for their channel, which featured Joe Cairo (MC College President), Vanessa Slater (Campus Director) and Candice Laczko (MC Alumni and Hairstyling Instructor).

6). Beauty Abroad: London & Dublin
In October, we packed up our shears and our passports, and jet setted across the Atlantic Ocean to study abroad in London and Dublin. From October 6th to 14th, MC College Hairstyling students and alumni attended the prestigious Salon International Showcase and Alternative Hair Show, toured the Guinness Brewery in Ireland, explored famous landmarks, and learned new techniques at the Pivot Point Academy, and much more! Along with MC College, 3 international beauty schools were on the trip. This once in a life time experience was a great way for our students to expand themselves and their career through Irish and British arts, history and culture.
Stay tuned for announcements of our next Beauty Abroad trip!
7). From sketchpad to runway
Just like #AlexFromTarget was trending on Twitter, our 2014 MC College New Designers Showcase was trending with fashion connoisseurs in Edmonton and Winnipeg. Every year, the Fashion Design graduates showcase their collections at the MC College Graduate Fashion Show in front of local fashion designers, boutique owners, fashionistas, bloggers, friends, family and MC staff. Every student designed and created 8 complete outfits. From tulle skirts to metallic men’s wear pieces, the students found inspiration for their collections from many facets, including Japanese street fashion, life experiences, cultural backgrounds and sci-fi movies.
Beauty changes lives. In partnership with the Canadian Cancer Society, Vernon MC College students were given the opportunity to expand their craftsmanship by cutting, coloring and styling wigs for cancer patients. Since November, students have personalized over 50 wigs, at no cost!
9). We won an award!
MC College won Modern Salon’s Excellence in Education Award for ‘Advanced Education and Alumni Programs.’ The award recognizes a school that has a strong alumni network and advanced education curriculum. Hundreds of cosmetology schools from across North America submitted their entries for this category. The Excellence in Education program is presented annually by Modern Salon, which is a leading North American trade magazine.
10). Champions Day
In support of YESS’ Champions Day, 100% of proceeds from Edmonton’s Salon and Spa services on December 2 were donated to the Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS). In total, we raised over $800. MC College has been a longstanding supporter of YESS, which provides programs and services for Edmonton youth at risk. Services include short term and long term shelters, educational programs, counseling, medical care and mentoring programs.
