💁 Student of the Month: Taya Tkachuk

Taya t.png

From balayage to “granny hair”, this lady is slaying it on Instagram! Born and raised in a small town, you may have seen her at last week’s MC Pop Up Salon  as a feature Entrepreneur/Stylist. 💇

Our Student of the Month is Hairstylist-to-be, Taya Tkachuk 👏 👏 from the Edmonton campus. “Taya is a lovely student inside and out. She is always willing to lend a helping hand and has an eagerness to learn” says Edmonton Director, Analia Rubie.

1). Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
“It’s always been a passion of mine. Back home in Lac La Biche, there weren’t many opportunities for me to explore hair. I was always the one my friends and family went to for hair and makeup…and it just became my thing.”

2). What do you like most about Hairstyling so far?
“Making people feel good about themselves. Once you’ve achieved this, it’s the best feeling ever and it makes you feel like you can do anything.”

3). How was the Pop Up Salon?
“It was a great experience outside of school! It helped me understand what goes on behind the scenes of a salon….I learned different techniques in blow drying…and running/managing a salon”.

4). What has surprised you the most about beauty school?
“Unit 3. I wasn’t expecting to learn about anatomy. I hate that people stereotype hair school as dumb but that’s not true. You need to know your stuff…even anatomy. All the studying and hair that you do puts a lot of stress on your body. You put so many hours into doing one clients’ hair to make them happy and studying on top of that! Its not just applying color or cutting hair…it’s much more”.

5). What do you love about MC College?
“I love the teachers and the people…it’s so welcoming here and I wasn’t expecting that when I started school! Every day is a fun day at school even if you’re in class or not.”

6). What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned at MC College? Why?
“Clients can be a bit overwhelming…you learn how to work with people of all personalities and know when to end a conversation politely…and saying no to clients can be hard too. Especially when it comes to hair color”

7). What are your plans for the future after graduating?
“I want to stay in Edmonton for the opportunities when I graduate. But in the future, I would love to move to Toronto or Montreal, and start doing hair competitions. I want to see how far I can get with my career”

8). What advice would you give to someone who wants to become a Hairstylist?
“Make sure it’s a passion of yours and not just a job…You need passion and drive cause you can’t just do a half assed job in this. You gotta be all in.
9). What is the best advice you’ve received about the industry, beauty school or career?
“You can’t please everyone…do the best you can and work with your own knowledge.”

Student of the Month: Carlo Rodillo 💈✂

carlo 1.png

From fades to comb overs and even the braided man top knot, he’s been on the barbering grind since becoming a student. Our November Student of the Month goes out to freshly graduated Hairstyling Student 👉Carlo Rodillo👈 from our Winnipeg campus!

Why did you choose Hairstyling as a career?
I’ve always been interested in Hairstyling but never got into it ‘cause of pressure from family. When I finally got into hair, I loved it! Growing up, drawing used to be my favorite hobby. When I first started school and cut hair for the first time, it gave me a nostalgic feeling with drawing. To me, drawing and hairstyling- that’s art!

What made you choose barbering?
“When I started school, I didn’t want to just cut girls hair and I didn’t see a lot of male hairstylists when I started school. I had a lot of guy friends who needed their hair cut and barbering went from there.”

What do you love about MC College?
“EVERYTHING. 👐 Everyone is so supportive, helpful and not rude.”

What has surprised you the most about beauty school?
“The places you can go with what you learn. I thought going to hair school meant that you could only be a hairstylist but you can go and enter competitions, become famous and lots more. There are a lot of things that I can do.”

What has been the most challenging thing you’ve learned at MC College?
“The chemistry behind hair – it’s not really something you think about when you’re doing a color or cutting hair.”

What are your plans for the future now that you’ve just graduated?
“Right now I’m apprenticing at Hunter and Gun Barber Shop. There’s so much I can do and there’s so many opportunities out there that it’s hard for me to say what my plans are.”

What’s the best advice you’ve received about beauty school?
“Don’t give up!!”

What are your must have Artego product(s)?
“Fast replay is pretty crazy! It’s the best product for men’s styling”

Go and give Carlo some love and follow him on Instagram (@thatbarberillo), snapchat (@kingrillorc) and twitter (@jcrodillo)!!

Every month, we highlight a student from one of our 6 campuses. The Student of the Month is nominated by Campus Directors and Instructors, and are chosen based on the students’ hard work and dedication in the salon/spa, classroom, community/volunteering and/or use of social media to promote themselves.

Student blog: Pivot Point Study Abroad in Barcelona

This month, we packed our passports and jetsetted to Barcelona! From the top of Monjuich Hill to the cobbled stones of Girona, here’s what MC College Saskatoon Student, Meaghan Palmer, had to say about the trip:

As we landed in Barcelona, Spain I knew I was going to love it there. Our first excursion was a trip to the little town of Sitges just outside Barcelona. We had been travelling for many hours with very little sleep but it was still beautiful. We were surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea and small buildings that looked like something from the past.

After we toured the town for a bit we were served paella; which is a traditional Spanish dish at a restaurant located just off the beach. It was a wonderful first day in Barcelona!

Our time in Barcelona was filled with tours of the beautiful city. We were able to see the Sagrada Familia which is a church designed by Gaude that has been being built for over a hundred years and is planned to be finished in 2026.

During our time there we got the privilege of two days of international training. We learned so much in those two days that we are now able to take back and further our careers in the beauty industry!

We also got to see things like the Picasso museum and the Cathedral of Barcelona.

My favorite part was our tour of the city from the top part of a double decker bus. The day was beautiful and we were able to enjoy the sun while taking in the breath taking sites of Barcelona.

My eight days in Barcelona was filled with culture, shopping, dining, and training.

We sipped wine in the center of Barcelona on the rooftop of our hotel. We dined in five star restaurants while enjoying the company of each other. I highly recommend Pivot Point’s study abroad trip to anyone who wants to experience culture, and the opportunity of international training. It was an experience I will never forget.

Have you ever wondered how to start your own salon or spa?

Modern Magazine estimated that the total revenue for all North American salon industry services in 2012 was approximately $75.38 billion and is expected to increase within the next few years. For this reason, many people in the beauty industry are motivated to advance their career by opening their own salon or spa.

Because many MC College students aspire to opening their own salon or spa, MC College is offering an entrepreneurship course to help Full Time Hairstyling students succeed as an entrepreneur in the beauty industry. With the help of Grant MacEwan University, industry experts and the Education Director at MC College, the course teaches students how to promote and differentiate their product and services, accounting/financial processes, and how to write a business plan. In this 5 day course, students travel to Grant MacEwan University to receive practical, hands-on training while at the same; experiencing what university life is like (did I mention that this course is provided to Full Time MC College Hairstyling students at no extra cost!).

Image

The Salon Entrepreneurship course is a complement course to MC College’s salon business program, ‘Shaping Your Success’. This program gives students the skills and knowledge to succeed in a client driven industry by focusing on topics such as personal marketing and client building/retention.

The Salon Entrepreneurship course is currently only offered at the Edmonton MC College Campus and is taught by Frank Saccucci, a professor in the School of Business at Grant MacEwan University. He has over 25 years of professional experience in management consulting, commercial banking and venture capital.
